G...
One morniGn' at breakfast I said to my wife
"We've been eCv'rywhere once and some places twice."
AA7s I had another helping of country ham she said
D"We ain't never been to Vietnam
And there's a bunch of Gour boys over there."
So Cwe went to the Orient Saigon. D7
Well we got a bGig welcome when we drove in
To the gates Cof a place that they call Long Ben.
We checkA7ed in and ev'rything got kind of quiet.
But a soldieDr boy said "Just wait till tonight.
Things get noisy Gthings start happenin'. C
Big bad firecraD7ckers."
Well that night wGe did about four shows for the boys
And they were livin' it uCp with a whole lot of noise.
We did oA7ur last song for the night
And we crawledD into bed for some peace and quiet.
But things weren't Gpeaceful and things weren't quiet. C
Things were scarD7y.
Well for a few minGutes June never said one word
And I tChought at first that she hadn't heard.
Then a shell A7exploded not two miles away.
She sat uDp in bed and I heard her say
"What was that?" I sGaid "That was a shell or a bomb." C
She said "I'm scared." I D7said "Me too".
Well all Gnight long that noise kept on
And the sound Cwould chill you right to the bone.
The bulleA7ts and the bombs and the mortar shells
DShook our bed ev'ry time one fell and it never let up. G
It was gonna get worse before it got Cany better. D7
Well when the sun came upG the noise died down.
We got a few minCutes sleep and we were sleepin' sound.
Then a soldierA7 knocked on our door and said
Last nightD they brought in 7 dead and 14 wounded. G
C
D7
And would we come down to the base hospital and see the boys. Yeah.
So we went tGo the hospital ward by day
CAnd ev'ry night we were singin' away.
Then the shells A7and the bombs till dawn again
And the helicopDters brought in the wounded men.
NGight after night day after day comin' anCd goin'. D7
So we sadly Gsang for them our last song
CAnd reluctantly we said "So long."
We did A7our best to let 'em know that we care
For ev'ryD last one of 'em that's over there.
Wether we beloGng over there or not
Somebody over here loves 'eCm and needs 'em. D7
Well now that's abGout all that there is to tell
About that lCittle trip into livin' hell.
And if I ever A7go back over there anymore
I hope there's none of Dour boys there for me to sing for.
I hope that war is Gover with
And they all come backC home to stay in peace. D7 G
