Ballad Of The Absent Mare
Ton : AEnglish
Couplet
Say a Aprayer for the cowboy his mare's run away
And he'll Dwalk till he finds her his darling his stray
But the Ariver's in flood and the roads are awash
And the Ebridges break up in the Dpanic of Aloss
Couplet
And Athere's nothing to follow there's nowhere to go
She's gone Dlike the summer gone like the snow
And the Acrickets are breaking his heart with their song
As the day Ecaves in and the Dnight is Aall wrong
Couplet
Did he Adream was it she who went galloping past
And bent Ddown the fern and broke open the grass
And Aprinted the mud with the iron and the gold
That he Enailed to her feet when Dhe Awas the lord
Couplet
And Aalthough she goes grazing a minute away
He tracks Dher all night and he tracks her all day
Oh blind Ato her presence except to compare
His injury Ehere with her Dpunishment Athere
Couplet
Then at Ahome on his branch in the highest tree
A songbird Dsings out so suddenly
Oh the sun Ais warm and the soft winds ride
On the Ewillow trees by the DriverAside
Couplet
Oh the Aworld is sweet and the world is wide
And she's Dthere where the light and the darkness divide
And the Asteam's coming off her she's huge and she's shy
And she Esteps on the moon when Dshe Apaws at the sky
Couplet
And she Acomes to his hand but she's not really tame
She longs to Dbe lost and he longs for the same
And she'll Abolt and she'll plunge through the first open pass
To roll and Eto feed in the Dsweet Amountain grass
Couplet
Or she'll Amake a break for the high plateau
Where Dthere's nothing above and there's nothing below
And it's Atime for their burden it's time for the whip
Will she Ewalk through the Dflame can Ahe shoot from the hip
Couplet
So he Abinds himself to the galloping mare
And she Dbinds herself to the rider there
And there Ais no space but there's left and right
And there Eis no time but Dthere's day Aand night
Couplet
And he Aleans on her neck and he whispers low
Whither thou Dgoest I will go
And they Aturn as one and they head for the plain
No need for Ethe whip no need Dfor the Arein
Couplet
Now the Aclasp of this union who fastens it tight
Who snaps it Dasunder the very next night
Some say Athe rider some say the mare
Or that Elove's like the smoke Dbeyond Aall repair
Couplet
But my Adarling says Leonard just let it go by
That old Dsilhouette on the great Western sky
So I pick Aout a tune and they move right along
And they're Egone like the smoke Dand Athey're gone like this song
