Create and edit a song

Want to add a song to the songbook or fix a chord chart? The editor gives you every tool: here is how to use it, step by step, then what each icon does.

Every account holder can create their own songs. They start out private (only you can see them); when you are happy with one, you can ask to make it public for the shared songbook. The editor uses the ChordPro format: a chord goes in square brackets, right before the syllable it falls on, for example [G] or [Am].

Add a song

1. Open the editor

   From "My songs", click "+ Create a song": the editor opens full screen. Your song is created privately — no one else sees it until you publish it.

2. Fill in the details

   Enter the title, artist, original key, capo and language. Tick one or more categories (folk, Christmas, French...) so you can find the song again easily.

3. Type the lyrics and chords

   Type or paste the lyrics in the large box. To attach a chord, write it in square brackets right before the syllable, for example: [Am]Imagine there's no [Cmaj7]heaven. You can also paste a song with "chords above the lyrics" and convert it with one button.

4. Use the toolbar

   The icons above the text box add chords, choruses, comments, fingerings, tabs and more. Place the cursor or select some text, then click: each icon is explained further down this page.

5. Check the preview

   The preview on the right updates as you type, with your key and capo. It is exactly what singers will see on their screens around the fire.

6. Save (and publish later)

   Click "Save": the song stays private and editable as long as you like. When it is ready, "Make public" sends it to moderation before it joins the shared songbook.

Edit a song

Your private songs: open "My songs", click "Edit" and change anything in the same editor. Nothing is shared until you make it public.

A song that is already public (even your own) cannot be edited directly, to protect the shared songbook: use "Suggest an edit". Your suggestion goes through moderation before everyone sees it.

Once your song is ready, add it to a playlist or a fire and start the sing-along. You can come back and refine it whenever you like.
